9 Reasons Independent Owner-Operator Truck Drivers Should Get a Flu Vaccine
Share |

It’s flu season - time for truck drivers to get a flu shot. Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from the flu. A flu vaccine can prevent missed work, doctor’s visits and the discomfort of being sick.

Truck drivers are specifically advised to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible. If you aren’t on the road, you aren’t making money, so it’s best to avoid getting sick in the first place.

Drivers with certain health conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, heart disease, blood disorders, extreme obesity or metabolic disorders are more likely to suffer serious flu complications, or even death. These populations of people should run, not walk, to the nearest vaccine distribution point (doctor’s office, clinic, pharmacy, etc.)

Here are 9 reasons truck drivers should be vaccinated against the flu, according to the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases.

1. There are many flu viruses and they are constantly changing. The composition of U.S. flu viruses are evaluated annually and vaccines are updated to combat circulating strains. Flu vaccines protect against the 3 or 4 viruses that will be the most common that year.

2. Vaccines are proven to keep you healthy. Regular vaccines will help prevent other infections such as shingles, pneumococcal disease and others. They are a safe and convenient preventative care measure you can take.

3. Vaccines can save your life. Every year, 50,000 adults in the U.S. die from diseases that could have been prevented with a vaccination.

4. Vaccines are safe. Vaccines are among the safest medical procedure and substance. The U.S. conducts the best post-licensure surveillance in the world; there is extraordinarily strong data on the safety of vaccines.

5. You can’t get the flu from a flu shot. Some vaccines contain “killed” virus and others have weakened live viruses in them, but you cannot catch the disease from the vaccine.

6. Young and healthy people can get very sick with the flu too. While infants, the elderly and certain populations of people are at greater risk, anyone can get sick, even if you’ve never had the flu before.

7. You can lose quite a bit of work time being sick. The average flu illness runs for 15 days. The average amount of time people miss work is 5 or 6 days. The flu can put a serious dent into your monthly revenue.

8. When you get sick, you expose other people, including family members when you’re home. The flu could prove to be more serious for young children, elderly or susceptible groups. When you get vaccinated, you’re protecting yourself and your children.

9. Your family and brokers are depending on you. When you get sick you miss work and are unable to perform your driving duties, causing a loss of income for your family as well as yourself.

Most of the time your health insurance will cover the cost of the flu vaccine. But if you find your insurance doesn’t cover it, the St. Christopher Truckers Fund is offering free flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines for all professional truck drivers with a current Class A CDL.

Free vouchers are available through:

·       Kroger/TLC

·       Walgreen’s

·       The Medicine Shoppe.

Go to the store website, print out your voucher, take it with you to the location of your choice and show your Class A CDL to receive the vaccine free of charge. It’s a good idea to call ahead to make sure you know they have the vaccine in stock before you make a trip to the pharmacy of your choice.

Vaccines are an important health precaution every truck driver should take. Keep yourself healthy (and wealthy) by taking the time to get your flu, shingles or pneumonia vaccine sooner rather than later.
